What IS he doing, just taking a stroll?

one theory is that the octopus is trying to catch some food on land (he pauses when he sees the crab)

Food is a likely theory. I remember in one of Mike De Gruy's documentaries a while back, he said that he had an octopus in a tank, and when he came into work one morning, he found that it had taken itself off to the tank where its food was kept. :D

Octopuses are definitely not daft!

Reverse-SCUBA octopus! Yay!

Giant keyhole limpets, though subtidal, can apparently do it too; we have one at the lab that keeps climbing out of its tank and going for a stroll around the aquarium.
